The Internet
is a world-wide network of computers connected
by the international telecommunications system,
which provides fast, efficient and inexpensive
access to all types of information from a wide
variety of sources.
These sources
range from countless commercial organisations
of all kinds, sizes and descriptions to virtually
every government, university and research facility
world-wide. Indeed, information on the Internet
is constantly being added, modified and updated
by several different groups and individuals, many
of them from their own homes.
Simply put,
the Internet, or Net, as it is affectionately
called, is the fastest, cheapest and most convenient
way to communicate with business associates, family
and friends throughout the world.
Whether as a
business tool for commercial or other organizations,
a bulletin board for governments and related agencies,
a research tool for professionals and students
or an educational tool for young children, the
Internet literally places the information of the
world at your fingertips!

Now that you
have a better understanding of the Internet and
what it can do for you, its time to get
connected! The following is a "shortlist"
of what youll need:
Hardware
-
A computer
with at least a 486/66MHz processor, or comparable
personal computer system, is required.
-
A modem,
which is a device that converts the computer
signals to telephone signals and vice versa,
and is necessary to enable your computer to
connect to InfoChannel in order to access
the Internet. While our service will be accessible
at lower modem speeds, we suggest a minimum
of 28.8 Kbps, but faster modems (up to 56K)
are highly recommended.
-
A telephone line is required
to connect to the Internet. This line must
be a standard, straight telephone line (i.e.
without call waiting, voice mail, etc.).
Software
Most computers
are equipped with software that allows connecting
to the Internet.
