InfoChannel was formed in Jamaica in 1995 and is the first commercial Internet Services Provider (ISP) to be established in the Caribbean. Our mission is to profitably provide to local and international clients reliable, quality services that facilitate the distribution of information and knowledge by utilizing telecommunications and information processing technologies.

Since 1995, while retaining its position as a leading ISP, it has expanded its operations to include a range of international and local data services. International traffic is carried by its licensed earth station (VSAT) facilities. Over the last 18 months, InfoChannel commenced the build out of a licensed wireless local network to carry domestic data, as well as provide the local links for international data and Internet traffic in the cities of Kingston and Montego Bay.

InfoChannel includes a wide cross section of Jamaican businesses among its corporate clients as well as a large percentage of residential Internet subscribers.

The company has been at the forefront of the battle for the deregulation of the telecommunications industry in Jamaica the final phase of which will take place in March, 2002.

In September 2000, InfoChannel announced an alliance with Centennial Communications Corporation which saw that company injecting JA $215 million into InfoChannel's operations. This move allowed InfoChannel to further expand and consolidate its position as a major player in the Jamaican and Caribbean telecommunications industry.

Centennial Communications Corporation is a leading independent wireless communications provider and is the fifth largest cellular operator in the United States of America. It has long standing operations in Puerto Rico and last year entered the Dominican Republic market by acquisition. Centennial is publicly traded on the NASDAQ exchange and has a market capitalization of US$ 1.57 billion. Its investment in InfoChannel will yield an equity position of 40% of the issued share capital.

Such an investment allows InfoChannel to achieve its business plan, which includes:

  • expansion by acquisition and investment in related enterprises in Jamaica and the Caribbean
  • expansion into cable operations
  • the offering of telecommunications services to free zones
